General Discussion / Re: Recent website pages
Last post by Victor - March 14, 2025, 11:05:18 AM
I updated my London page

https://constantinethegreatcoins.com/London/

I went through all my trays and sorted them earliest to latest and checked each coin against my website. I had several that I sold and deleted them, I found a few duplicates and removed them unless there was something special. I even found one coin in my trays that I had forgot to add to my site

I have a Trajan Decius with an old dealer tag.

Karel.jpg

Karel Chaura was born and died in Prague (4 Nov 1869- 5 May 1945) He was an antiquarian and founding member and official of the Czechoslovak Numismatic Society. He was a collector of coins and medals. He was the son of František Rudolf Chaura and their collection is now kept in the National Museum.

Late Roman Bronze coins / Re: The Appleford Hoard
Last post by Heliodromus - March 07, 2025, 02:35:57 PM
Interesting to see the relative numbers of London SARMATIA DEVICTA (for Constantine I) vs VOT X (for Crispus and Constantine II) - 48/144/175. The hoard seems large enough, and straddles this time period, that I assume these are reflective of relative quantities in which they were made. Poor dad getting no respect.

It's also notable that while coins from this "PLON u" ( SARM. DEV/VOT X) issue are common in the hoard, there are none from the following (unlisted in RIC) "PLON u dot" one, confirming that this must have been a very low volume issue.

Late Roman Bronze coins / The Appleford Hoard
Last post by Victor - March 07, 2025, 10:17:16 AM
I just bought a group of 20 Constantinian London coins from the latest CNG auction. here is the description--

ROMAN. Imperial. Lot of twenty (20) London mint Æ Folles. Includes: various Constantinian rulers and types of mid-late reductions. Average VF - Near EF. LOT SOLD AS IS, NO RETURNS. Twenty (20) coins in lot.

From the Dr. Malcolm Lyne Collection.

The strange thing, is that if you look closely at the tags, you can see that most of these coins are from the Appleford Hoard. CNG seems to have forgotten to include what, at least to me, seems to be an important detail. They also sold some single coins from the hoard; which they described as such.

The Appleford Hoard was discovered in 1954 and contained 5,752 coins, most from the Constantinian period.

Here is a link to the article by C. King, "The Appleford Hoard"  Revue belge de numismatique

If the link doesn't land in the right section, scroll up or down to find it--- it is the 1977 volume

Last post by Victor - March 05, 2025, 11:45:12 AM
I have these two coins with the same RIC number that essentially have different bust types. Of course, different engravers are trying to accomodate the lengthy legend.

the first is the more usual bust type

and this one, with no shoulders
