A couple of days ago, someone asked me about the first coin below. Below is my response (with additions in parenthesis)-


one diagnostic that I look for in fakes on these is the centering dot (if present) in the middle of the wreath. On genuine examples, the centering dot is usually small, like a pin prick (with sloping edges); while fakes often have a much more defined circular dot (with edges that go straight down). There are always exceptions, but the example you posted has a more defined circular dot.


compare the first coin (fake) with the second. The differences are subtle, but I think that they are detectable.

there are, of course, other things to look at- for example the star of the bottom coin, it is nicely engraved with a sharp ridge line running down the arms of the star.
