Thank you Victor, I appreciate the insight!

Also... a question. I notice that you're able to "like" posts. Can posters do the same (and how?) or is that feature only available to you? Thanks!

COTD / Constantine I GE from Arles wi...

This is a nice coin for the type; but the main reason I found it interesting is that it came with a tag from Scott Uhrick, who went by Joviel online. He was very active 20 years ago in the uncleaned community and his website is still up.

https://www.joviel.com/main_frame.html

Constantine I
A.D. 336
Ӕ nummus   15x16mm   1.8g
CONSTANTI-NVS MAX AVG; rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right.
GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS; Two soldiers helmeted, stg. facing one another, reversed spear in outer hands, inner hands on shields resting on the ground; between them one standard inscribed with a Chi-Rho.

When assigning RIC numbers to these, it is a bit arbitrary since the biggest difference between the issues is size, and there is overlap, i.e. Second series first group (Magnentius) RIC 195- 197 dia. 25- 26mm, second group (Nepotian) RIC 198- 200 dia. 23- 25mm, third group (Magnentius) RIC 204- 205 dia. 22- 24mm. There is likely no actual way to tell these coins apart.

I have had several pearl-diademed examples that were too small for the first group so I listed them like this-- RIC VIII Rome 198/ 204

Identification / Constantius II - GLORIA ROMANO...
Last post by Joshmaggosh - May 05, 2025, 01:08:32 AM
Hi all,
I recently purchased this Constantius II - GLORIA ROMANORVM. I don't have the relevant volume of RIC and my usual method of attributing through finding other examples is giving mixed returns.

I've found examples listed as RIC VIII 196, 199, 205 and others. I understand the RIC volume may be a bit wishy washy, trying to separate these between before Nepotian's revolt, during and after without much of a difference. So... with that in mind, that there may be a mixed attribution, what is an accurate attribution for this coin? Thank you!

Rosette diadem, A in obverse left.
RP mint mark, star in upper reverse right reverse.
26x23mm
4.4 grams.

Identification / Re: Imitation campgate?

it's definitely unofficial, since Trier never has open doors and Constantine issues only have two turrets.

Identification / Imitation campgate?
Last post by tjaart - May 04, 2025, 05:08:03 AM
Hi all,

Here is another one I am stuck with. It does not look like an imitation but I can't quite identify it.

CONSTAN TINVS AVG
VIRTV SAVGG
campgate, 7 layers, 4 turrets, star above, doors open
PTR? in exe.
19mm, 2.2g

I thought it might be a variant of Trier 449? Any ideas?

Thanks!

The new RIC V.5 is a chore to use. Variations that may have been better suited as footnotes are given a RIC number.

This Maximianus coin used to be London 34; but now it has different numbers according to the sceptre.

a vertical scepter is RIC V.5 London 3607

and a transverse sceptre is RIC V.5 London 3610

Transverse_3610.jpg

and the Allectus galley type has over a dozen different entries according to mast or no mast, waves or no waves, how many rowers etc.

RIC V.5 London 276 (maybe)

Yes...and I quess that I am happy  :-\

It is a superb example though and I really wanted it for my campgate collection. The last example I had was, in dealer talk, "collector grade" (when you just have to have an example) and I eventually sold it.
