Constantius II campgate from Arles with lots of dots
« on: March 19, 2016, 11:58:11 AM »
Though you can often see campgates with dots, I thought that this was a neat example with the outside border of the campgate and the doorway made with dots, dots over the turrets and the larger dots in the top row.

Certainly not "near mint state" as the seller claimed though.

Constantius II
A.D. 329
19mm     3.3gm
FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C; Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust left.
VIRTVS CAESS; camp gate with no doors and four turrets with star above them; T/F across fields.
in ex. PCONST
RIC VII Arles 339

That is a very nice example and unfortunately I didn't bid enough to get it. I have a couple where the outline of the campgate are dots as well but they are from Siscia (I don't have photos though).

Could it be imitative? The style looks slightly crude to me, eg. the unevenness of the lettering in the mint mark

Despite the unevenness, I think that it is an official mint product.
