Magnus Maximus Trier campgate, unlisted?
« on: September 12, 2015, 12:24:50 PM »
Hi,

I recently acquired this campgate and while writing it up (mostly using Helvetica's spreadsheets), I noticed that she only mentions this variety with an S between the turrets and not a star. In RIC IX it only mentions a star between the turrets but not the same reverse legend break.

Magnus Maximus 383-388AD
Pearl diademed cuirassed bust, DN MAG MA-XIMVS PF AVG
Campgate, 4 layers, 2 tower turrets, star above, no door, SPES RO-MA-NORVM
SMTR
RIC IX Trier 87a?
13mm, 1.2g

Is this unlisted or just a variety of a listed coin?

Thanks!
Tjaart

As you wrote, it is always a star between turrets, the only difference between 87a (S) and 87b (R) is the obverse legend break. It seems that yours is 87a (MA-XIMVS)

Yes, yours is 87a. Even though it has an unlisted reverse break, it is still 87a, but you could write it up as 87a var., and indicate the variation being the reverse break, which is not noted in RIC.

Thanks a lot Genio and Victor. I appreciate the info. Do the variety with the S between the turrets exist at all? I had a look through Coinproject and AC search and couldn't find any.

Thanks!

No, as Genio said "it is always a star between the turrets" Dane (Helevetica) has simply made an error in copying the info from RIC to her excel sheet.

I didn't notice that but may I suggest that you could add that there is probably an error in RIC description as I cannot find the RO-MANORVM break?
All the specimen I have seen for 87a,b,c have the break RO-MA-NORVM.

That was a good idea to look at some actual examples, and I just looked at the few examples that I have or had in the past, and all were also SPES RO-MA-NORVM

I will have to add a note to my RIC IX then. All of the specimens I looked at also had SPES RO-MA-NORVM as well.

Thanks again!
