Constantine I - SOLI INVICTO COMITI "rising hand"
« on: June 23, 2014, 04:55:20 PM »
It's of course a "not in ric" becouse the "rising hand" bust is unrecorded for the A|S issue...but i have some doubts about the obverse legende and the bust type.

I think that the obverse legend is IMP CONSTANTINVS AVG, and the bust type is L2 (laur, cuir raising r. hand).
Is this coin listed in the Bastien work about Lyons mint?

There are several of these listed in Bastien, but none for laureate and cuirassed bust only, perhaps it is listed in one of the supplements, which I do not have.

I forgot that I do have the supplements...I am getting old or have too many books- or both!

It is not listed in the supplements either. The closest match in all, is #605, which has an obverse legend of CONSTANTINVS AVG

It's only my guess but the obv. legend is probably longer: IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG.

What is the weight and the diameter and is it possible to obtain a better picture?

You may be right. My guess was based on fact that AVG (3 letters) occupies five times less space than CO....X, so there should be room for circa 15 letters. But, indeed, the engraver has started with very wide letters in IMP.

I am waiting eagerly for the beautiful big picture and the data.
