VLPP from Siscia, decorated shield
« on: September 16, 2023, 11:53:50 AM »
Dear Victor, dear all
I have a few doubts about the correct RIC reference of this coin.
My guess is RIC 50, BSIS* in exergue.
Am I right?
Thanks
Nicola

If there is a star (which is not clear to me) it is RIC 50. If no star, it is RIC 56.

Siscia 61 does sometimes have decorated shields, but the flan on this coin looks like the earlier issues. The earlier issues (RIC 47-56) are on a small (and thicker) flan with a small portrait and have a higher relief. As the issues continue, the flans and portrait become larger (the flan is also thinner) and the relief is smaller.

Thanks Lech, thanks Victor. Those are the kind of infos I would have to better ID my coins. I can confirm your impression: a small flan. I think the altar design could also help me.

Yes, the X is an earlier altar design; though RIC 50 and 56 have it. I only recall RIC 61 with a dot on altar.

I only recall RIC 61 with a dot on altar.

X is also not unusual. I don't have RIC 61 on my page because it is listed with all officinae. But there is also a quite common unlisted variety with bust H11.

Only few examples from officina B (total 13 ex.; 6 ex. with dot, 7 ex. with X)

This one with note ex Victor Clark  :)
