Constantine I campgate from Rome
« on: November 18, 2021, 08:26:01 PM »
Just sold...congrats to whoever out bid me!  Not in RIC and it also looks like it is draped only.

Constantine I
A.D. 318- 319
18mm    3.5g
CONSTANTI-NVS AVG; helmeted and draped bust left, spear over right shoulder and shield on left arm.
VIRTV-S AVGG; camp gate with closed doors and three turrets, across fields P-R
In ex. RT
RIC VII Rome –

I saw that one but these days I just cannot afford the prices these Rome campgates go for... I am a bit jealous of whoever got that one :)

Although the cuirass is not clearly visible (but there is something above paludamentum)  I would describe this bust as draped and cuirassed.

Yes, I thought my bid had some wiggle room, but I don't guess I was too surprised to be outbid. I would have bid more, but I had bids on three other coins that I won.

Well, that was me. :P Thanks for the congrats!

If it's any comfort, I dropped a nuclear bomb on that one at T-6 ... just glad the collateral damage wasn't worse!

This coin pushed multiple buttons for me, which is why I went all-in on it. The main interest is the helmet (which is the peaked archaic/pseudo-corinthian type), used in conjunction with this reverse type. The left facing bust is unlisted regardless of helmet type, but to be expected in a way given that we also see left facing busts with adjuncts and different helmet types at different phases of the coinage. I would really expect to see this same archaic helmet with a right facing bust for this type too, but the rarity of this helmet+reverse-type combo may reflect a later start of the campgate type during this P-R coinage.

I've only ever seen this bust type once before, same obverse die, paired with a different reverse die of same closed-door campgate type.

Well I am glad that someone won it that will appreciate it. I would have bid quite a bit more, but my biggest concern in that auction was the left facing CONSERVATOR which I also made a topic about.

Congratulation Ben, it’s a master piece.
I have this one in my archives.

Thanks, Nikko!

That's the same specimen I've seen.

This coin probably fits my page too, so reverse and data, please.
