Did I steal this lot?
« on: July 09, 2021, 08:40:25 AM »
I just won this lot for 100 GBP yesterday and I pleasantly surprised. I had my max bid about 5 times that much...of course I would have been upset to win for my max bid. I guess I have overpaid so many times that coin karma finally came around to my side.

I think so! third coin on top row is Rome 44A right? A common type but from a rare early issue, well done

Yes, it looks like 44a. The main reason I wanted the lot was 2nd row far right, a Constantine as Caesar from Carthage (I have been on a Carthage bender for a while now); but right beside it is another Caesar issue from Trier. I would have paid 100 pounds for the Carthage coin alone.

Yes, I saw the Carthage Constantine - it is rated as Common, but sounds like it's a bit harder to find than RIC's rating would indicate?

I think they are more scarce than common; though I have sold 4 in the last few years-- so not that rare either. I was really looking for a replacement, and getting impatient, and I have only seen one other currently for sale on Vcoins or MA shops. This one looks to be in really great condition, though it has some minor encrustations.

Congratulations on (another) great deal!

I recently completed a ‘set’ of these reduced Carthage folles. It took a couple of years, but only because I wanted to include the scarcer variant with the city goddess holding branches instead of fruits (issued from all four officinae, so it’s not simply an engraver’s whim).

I thought I’d never find one from officina A, but the same week (!) that I overpayed for a  grotty one, two other (and much nicer) specimens came up for sale. So it goes …

Congrats...it's always nice to complete a set. I keep kicking myself because I have sold so many Carthage coins over the years before I started actively collecting them...I am still trying to replace some that I used to have. I have several variations of "fruit" on SALVIS types; which I think is variously fruit and grains...whichever the engraver preferred, though maybe there is a more subtle pattern.

From the ones I have photo of, consistent with what you have there, maybe branches for AVCTA KART vs (dangling) fruits for FEL KART ?

I havn't looked for exceptions, though.

That's a good suggestion, but I shouldn't have posted just those AVCTA examples. Below are three FEL from Constantius, all the same RIC, with first having both up, next one up and one down, and third both down. These seem to be different combinations of fruits and grains...sometimes all fruits and all grains, sometimes mixed.

Does anyone of you know what happened with the book version of Guillaume Malingue's dissertation on the Carthage mint? I'd love to see it published, especially as RIC has become obsolete.

I only know about this book...which you have probably already read.

Guillaume Malingue The Coinage of Domitius Alexander (308-310 AD)

Yeah, I did. It's a quick read (there isn't that much to say about Domitius Alexander, and the corpus is short, even including all the known fakes.)

He's on academia.edu so you could try messaging him there. The most recent paper he has there (from 2017) also includes this e-mail address: gmalingue@yahoo.fr

Thanks a lot! (I think he might have left academia, but it's worth a try)
