Constantius II with Constantinopolis mule from Trier
« on: April 16, 2021, 09:03:38 AM »
This coin just sold in Roma and was listed as an official mule. I think it may be unofficial though. Anytime you see an LRB mule, that is the first question-- is it official? This one looks very, very good, but some little things bug me, like the odd flan. The portrait is a little irregular (a bit thin and tapers down), though by itself not a problem. Some odd spacing-- NOB-C and in the mintmark, though once again on its own, not a problem; but all these little things add up. Constantinopolis is nicely engraved but seems a little squat and has bug eyes. So I am not sure what to think.

Constantius II, as Caesar, BI Mule Nummus. Treveri, AD 332-333. FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C, laureate and cuirassed bust to right / Victory standing to left on prow, holding transverse sceptre and resting hand on shield; TR•P in exergue. For obv., cf. RIC VII 540; for rev., RIC VII 543. 2.03g, 19mm, 11h.
