Constantius I argenteus from Carthage
« on: December 21, 2020, 09:31:50 AM »

I prefer the large Carthage bronzes, but wanted to get an example of this type.

Constantius I. As Caesar, AD 293-305. AR Argenteus (18mm, 2.74 g, 6h). Carthage mint, 3rd officina. Struck circa AD 296-298. Laureate head right / Africa standing facing, head left, holding standard and tusk; at her feet, lion standing left, head right, with bucranium to left; T. RIC VI 14a; RSC 33.

Wow! I didn’t know the type existed. That is one beautiful, rare coin. Nice provenance too. Congratulations!

one of the reasons I wanted to get this coin was that it was in the Charles Oman collection.

from wikipedia--

Sir Charles William Chadwick Oman, KBE, FBA (12 January 1860 – 23 June 1946) was a British military historian. His reconstructions of medieval battles from the fragmentary and distorted accounts left by chroniclers were pioneering.

his collection was sold by Christie's
