Constantius I - cannot find in RIC
« on: October 29, 2020, 09:06:40 AM »
Hello ladies and gentlemen,
Got a batch of coins that kept me busy for more than a week but apparently the "mystery" is not 100% solved.

This one is a Constantius I as Caesar, Genio Popvli Romani type, Trier, but bust left.

FL VAL CONSTANTIVS NOB C
On reverse - B- gamma across fields, TR in exergue

I cannot seem to find a match in RIC.

Also, for this type I knew that bust left versions are rarer - is this correct?

Your coin is RIC VI Trier 196 with a workshop that is not listed in RIC-- only A is in RIC

Found it, thank you.
I think this is quite rare, anyway a good coin, especially for the price paid (about 4$)

11.12 g 26 mm  but the coin was already identified

Reason for edit - I wrote incorrect weight/size, there was an error in my personal catalogue.

Thank you!

I know and exactly this identification (which is correct) is the reason to show your coin on my "Not in RIC" page. BTW better picture would be welcome.

Perfect, feel free to add it.
If you need (slightly) better pictures please give me a sign, although photographing coins is certainly not my biggest talent.

Thank you again. Now I am a little bit more convinced that the officina letter is rather "B" than distorted "A".

To be honest with you when I first posted this coin I was convinced it is a B.
Yesterday I had the idea that in fact it is an A but due to wear it looks like a B.

Now it's not 100% clear with the coin in hand but it looks more like a B.

OK. The surface of the coin is very bumpy. Even "T" in mintmark looks odd.

This is also because of my phone and especially the light in my house.
I have no idea why, but I always had issues when taking pics of coins with dark toning and everything I tried failed (including a new phone).
The coin looks better in hand and I don't think it's a fake. But yes, the surface is odd, I think it was harshly cleaned in the past and/or it was buried in an acidic environment or something like that.

Try with a cheap camera with macro. Modern phones are good for selfie and HD films but not particularly for coins. Also source of light is very important.
