Galerius SOL from Alexandria...unrecorded type?
« on: July 09, 2020, 08:54:49 AM »
here's a strange coin, with a reverse not listed in RIC. It is a fractional coin. I don't recall ever seeing anything similar.

ex-Dattari

Galerius
A.D. 294- 305
17x18mm   3.0g
MAXIMIANVS CAESAR; radiate and draped bust right.
SOLI INVICTO; Sol rad., stg. L., raising r. hand, [globe in l.], chlamys across l. shoulder, in left field A.
In ex. ALE
RIC VI Alexandria –

Interesting. It reminds me of Smith's observation that among the first Tetrarchs it was Galerius, not Constantius, who struck more coins featuring Sol.

Smith, M. D., 2000. The Religious Coinage of Constantius I. Byzantion, 70(2), pp. 474-490.

Alexandria was the territory of Diocletian though.

Smith does not always note who actually controlled the mints that issued these coins. For instance, when he talks about the Galerius coins with Sol (pg 479) the first five examples from RIC V (footnote 22) are from the territory of Constantius I.

That's a good point. Lots of complicating factors.

I looked at the article on Jstor and very briefly read through it and it seemed like someone who was only superficially knowledgeable on the coins and literature, but already had an opinion and fitted the data to confirm.

EDIT: I realize my response might seem overly harsh, but it was merely a reflexive, knee-jerk response to my brief look at the article. I also know it is much easier to criticize than to create!

thanks Lech, it does seem likely to have been issued at the same time.
