Lucius Verus denarius with a countermark?
« on: October 08, 2018, 12:47:56 PM »
After I photographed this coin, I noticed something unusual below the bust. At first I thought it was a defect like a lamination, but as I looked closer, it looks more like a countermark, but modern, like a collection stamp. It reminded me of the famous Gonzaga coins from the 17th century that were stamped with an eagle (see last picture below for an example).  There also looks like what might be a small circle to the right, though this is less clear. I am not sure what the countermark is, or even if it is actually a countermark...perhaps my imagination is getting the better of me.
