This coin has a rare bust type for Aurelian, and it is facing right instead of left like the normal described by RIC...of course RIC V is very much in need of updating; there is probably a better attribution in Ripostiglio della Venera - Nuovo catalogo illustrato, Vol. II/1 - Aureliano by Sylviane Estiot - Venera Hoard Volume II Part 1 - Aurelian, but I don't have this book yet.

Aurelian

A.D. 271

Æ Antoninianus

20x22mm   2.7gm

IMP AVRELIANVS AVG; radiate and cuirassed bust right holding shield on right and spear pointing forward.

IOVI CONSER; Emperor standing right, receiving globe from Jupiter.

In ex. S

cf. RIC V Serdica 260

Excellent coin and quite rare.
Only one example in La Venera - LV9766 and 9 total specs known to S. Estiot w/ only one obverse die.

Here is a different die from the 9 known to Estiot.

Here is the link to Estiot's page-

Also different officina. All those listed by S. Estiot from 2nd officina and also yours come from the same obv die.
The first officina is listed here and has a couple more dies - http://www.ric.mom.fr/en/coin/2571

Yes, the light bulb just went off...she means only second workshop coins share the same obverse die.

On a side note- I just ordered Estiot's - Venera Hoard Volume II Part 1 - Aurelian

I'd also be interested in buying the books of madame Estiot but I found it quite difficult to have them shipped here. Hope to buy them while on one of my trips.

The shipping was quite expensive- almost 40 euros, but now I have all 4 volumes except the one on Probus.

update on part II...the editor was actually out of stock, so I am still looking for this volume.
