Title: ancient or modern forgery?
Post by: Nikko on December 28, 2013, 10:05:05 AM
It looks to be an ancient barbarous copy but some collectors think it's a modern forgery.

It does have some features that make it look cast (soft details, what looks like some casting bubbles in fields), but some ancient imitations were cast. The patina looks a little off, like the effect when you use something like Jax to repatinate, but maybe it was repatinated after a harsh cleaning or the lighting is just giving that look.

It is hard to say for certain without having it in hand; and even then, it might be hard to say for certain.

Hard to say just from the pictures. I never saw a similar ancient portrait.

So i think probably a cast and patinated modern tourist fake than a contemporary ancient imitation.

Its a fake for me, epigraphy looks strange for a contemporary imitation, cause is spelling in a good latin but I never see this style, and I see a lot of imitative coins, in good latin and in unrecognizable letters... but never in this style.
