Title: Constantinopolis bust right
Post by: ae22 on September 28, 2013, 09:58:33 AM
I am hoping to get your opinions of this coin I recently acquired.

I'm thinking barbarous from Trier, but maybe a fake. Would be neat if official.

It's quite thin.... 15mm, 1.2g.

Thanks

Nice acquisition. It's of course an ancient imitation but not necessarly barbarous because the legends is correct.

Thanks Nikko,

Since I first posted I found Victor's info on the Maidenhatch hoard and another right facing example here:  http://www.constantinethegreatcoins.com/comm/ at the bottom of the page.

I wonder if this one came from that hoard? I purchased it from a seller in Manchester.

The Maidenhatch Hoard is in the Reading Museum in Berkshire, UK.

Which is now in my personal collection.  :D

I like very much the one you have found. I'am always a little bit surprised with those coins on which the bust appears in the wrong direction but the legend is not retrograd ( in this case, this would be the sign of "positive" die engraving). Two engravers or some intentional work?

Very cool, Genio

The sceptre on your coin resembles a  trident.

In fact, what we see like a trident is the combination between the sceptre, the crest and its tail.
Like it sometimes appears on official Trier coinage :

Note that most of the time on Trier coinage it seems to be the tail of the crest while on eastern coinage, it seems to be, but not always, the ties of the wreath.
