Title: some more Maxentian pediments
Post by: Victor on June 04, 2024, 01:02:54 PM
I just won two more coins with decorated pediments.

The coin below is a bit of a mystery. It is clearly Sol holding a globe in center. To the right, possibly/probably a river god. To the right is the strange bit; it looks like an altar and then something else. Drost has the same type as "Sol flanked by river gods"

Maxentius
A.D. 307- 308
25mm    6.1g
IMP MAXENTIVS P F AVG; laureate head right.
CONSERV VRB SVAE; Roma seated in hexastyle temple holding globe & sceptre; Sol holding globe flanked by river gods [?] in pediment; Victories with garlands as acroteria; H in left field.
In ex. RP
RIC VI Rome 205

and the next one is Jupiter and Hercules

Maxentius
A.D. 308- 310
25mm    6.1g
IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG; laureate head right.
CONSERV VRB SVAE; Roma seated in hexastyle temple holding globe & sceptre; Jupiter and Hercules in pediment; Victories with garlands as acroteria.
In ex. RBT
RIC VI Rome 208

Congratulations, Victor!

The first coin (which is already on my page) is ROMA 204. Drost no. 88, variety e (Sol flanked by unknown elements). Roma 205 probably does not exist. Coin cited in RIC (from ANS collection) is in fact ROMA 204.

Thanks Lech, I should have looked the coin up instead of copy and pasting another coin description.  ::)
