Title: DIVO MAXIMIANO PATRI from Rome
Post by: Victor on January 14, 2021, 09:23:59 AM
Here's a rarer type with a neat obverse legend that just sold on eBay. It was issued by Maxentius for his father-- who he apparently got along with fine after his death.

circa 310- 311
OBV: IMP MAXENTIVS DIVO MAXIMIANO PATRI
REV: AETERNAE MEMORIAE
RIC VI Rome 244

These are nice - sometime with very elaborate mauseleums.

I'd like to collect them, but kinda expensive for something that's not really my focus.

The legends on these are interesting - spelling out exactly who all these illustrious dead relatives are :

IMP MAXENTIVS DIVO CONSTANTIO COGNBrother-in-law / Kinsman
IMP MAXENTIVS DIVO CONSTANTIO ADFINICousin
IMP MAXENTIVS DIVO ROMVLO N V FILIOSon
IMP MAXENTIVS DIVO MAXIMIANO  PATRIFather
IMP MAXENTIVS DIVO MAXIMIANO  SOCEROFather-in-law (Galerius)

As you say, maybe easier (for Maxentius, at least) to like people when they are dead... No mention of living relatives Constantine or Fausta!

I think that a lot of people are like Maxentius, in that deceased relatives are set up on a pedestal. I have been in several genealogical groups, like Sons of the American Revoulution, and all the dead ancestors are awesome...living ones not so much.  ::)
