I saw this coin and thought it was interesting. Though Valens was never given the official damnatio memoriae, it seems that someone did not like him. The scratches on the obverse of this coin seem very deliberate. Maybe something to do with his loss at the Battle of Adrianople; which marked the beginning of the end for the Roman Empire.
