Unlisted Constantine II campgate from Rome?
« on: January 25, 2015, 07:33:39 AM »
Hi everyone,

I managed to get this coin for a bargain price at the Basel coin show yesterday. I am a bit puzzled though. When looking in Helvetica's xls spreadsheet and on acsearch I can't find this type for Constantine II.

The closest I can find is an unlisted RIC VII Rome 173 variety with no doors or one with doors open. I can't find any with doors closed for him. Is this coin unlisted or am I missing something somewhere?

Constantine II
Laureate, draped cuirassed bust right, CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C
Campgate, 6 layers, 3 turrets, no star, P in left field, R in right field, RP in exe. VIRTV-S AVGG
19mm, 2.7g

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Thanks Victor. I still haven't managed to get RIC VII. Is the P officina listed in RIC for the closed, panelled doors? I assume the mintmark does not change the RIC number? In hand the mintmark looks like an RP and not like the R(T/S/Q). I've found other instances of the RP mintmark in campgates but not for Constantine II with closed doors.

I also assume that RIC VII 193 has open doors.

Thanks for the quick ID, I appreciate the help.

Yes, it is an unlisted workshop. RIC notes S,T, and Q for this number. No, the mintmark does not change the RIC number.

RIC 193 does have open doors, but four turrets.
