Title: Constans Siscia Phoenix with large symbol in field
Post by: marandnumiz on August 12, 2016, 11:59:49 AM
This coin is rarely seen, although it is rated as common by RIC VIII - 247, p. 366. Another interesting feature is that the large symbol in the right field is not the right match for its officina (gamma). The coin looks perfectly official.

Yes, the workshop A and the symbol are correctly matched in your example.

here's a note about these symbols from Helvetica (Dane Kurth)

"The author of RIC presumed that the symbols are directly linked to the officina, so ASIS would have symbol 1, BSIS would have symbol 2, etc. This however is not the case, as we can see a mixture of symbols used with other officina letters."
