Crispus Sol from London with spread chlamys
« on: November 20, 2014, 11:09:15 AM »
I don't know that the cloak styles are anything more than different engraving styles, but in keeping with RIC VII tradition here is an unlisted coin. RIC only lists this type as Sol with chlamys over left shoulder. Lech has another example here- http://www.forumancientcoins.com/notinric/7lon-147_cri.html

Crispus
A.D. 318
18x20mm   3.3 gm
FL IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES; laureate and cuirassed bust.
SOLI INVICTO COMITI; Sol rad., stg. r., raising r. hand, Victory on globe in l., chlamys spread,
Crescent in left field.
In ex. PLN
Cf. RIC VII London 143

the cloak styles

It is not only the cloak styles. Note that Sol is standing RIGHT, not left. So this coin meets the same criteria as, for example, LONDON 80 or LONDON 99 and 100.

Note that Sol is standing RIGHT, not left.

I didn't even notice that...but that is also something that I am not sure merits different RIC numbers; but is once again maybe merely something the engravers didn't feel the need to make exactly the same each time.
