FEL TEMP with Chi-Rho and mark of value in field
« on: November 07, 2014, 10:39:12 AM »
I don't have an obverse picture for this coin, but it is either Constantius II or Gallus, so Aquileia 195 or 196. RIC rates this type as common, but I believe that they are not actually that common. This might be an example of major collections having these because the Chi-Rho makes it more collectible, which does not really reflect how often they really show up. Wildwinds has two examples for Gallus, but none for Constantius II.

The number LXXII on this coin likely stands for 1/72 roman pounds

Hi Victor,
Here's the one that I have.  Got it on ebay about eight years ago.  I've only seen a couple others on ebay since.  I bid on them too but didn't get them.  Mark

Hello Mark,

I saw your example on Wildwinds...I am hoping mine will turn out to be Constantius II, but either way I am happy to get an example.

It was Gallus and unfortunately the obverse is rougher than the reverse. Ragged flan, porous surfaces and over-cleaned...but it has a clear Chi-Rho.

Hello,
Bought this Constantius II on ebay a couple weeks ago.  Maybe I paid too much considering it's condition, $62 including shipping.  But at least I have one now.
