Title: Constantine MARTI CONSERVATORI from Ticinum
Post by: Victor on May 04, 2023, 11:23:38 AM
RIC only lists this type from Trier; but they were also struck at London, Ticinum and Aquileia. Based on style, this one is from Ticinum. Pierre Bastien published two articles about these coins in the 70's.

Bastien, Pierre. “Une emission de folles sans marque a Ticinum en 312.” Schweizer Münzblätter  20 (1970) : 114- 115.

________. “Folles sans marque emis par Constantin en Italie.” Schweizer Münzblätter  24 (1974) : 5- 8.

Lech has this type here-- https://www.notinric.lechstepniewski.info/6tic-115_unm1.html

Constantine I
A.D. 312-313
21mm   4.4g
CONSTANTINVS P F AVG; laureate and cuirassed bust right
MARTI CONSERVATORI; helmeted & cuirassed bust of Mars right
RIC VI Ticinum ---

Hi Victor

How do you distinguish Ticinum from Aquileia? I always have doubts. Sometimes a coin looks like Ticinum to me, and then I think maybe it's Aquileia after all. And then again the other way around. Maybe I should look for die-links with obverses from other issues.

Yes, die-links are the best way to be sure. Bastien illustrated this one from Aquileia--

though I am not sure mine is not actually from Aquileia, see the second pic below which was described by Paul-Francis Jacquier as being from Aquileia.

I would say Ticinum, based upon Mars portrait style.

The one attached is clearly from Aquileia mint, IMHO

Thanks Victor. Probably a good start will be the analyze of all specimens listed in Bastien's papers.

Hi Victor,

I am just studying Bastien's paper  “Folles sans marque emis par Constantin en Italie.” Am I right that no. 2c (attributed to Ticinum) is from the same dies as no. 8 (attributed to Aquileia according to die-link). Seems to me that also Bastien had problems with these two mints.

Yes, they seem to be a match.

I finally added all the photos from Bastien, so there were also some changes. It's better, but not as good as I would like. I appreciate any comments. And of course info about new specimens.

I think this one i got a few days ago is also from Ticinum.

Portrait style is pretty similar to this one:

but with Mars looking right.
