Title: RIC diadem types for Vetranio
Post by: Victor on August 06, 2017, 11:44:18 AM
Something that I had not paid particular attention to before, but RIC has an error in the bust description for Vetranio from Thessalonica. RIC 135 has Vetranio with a pearl diadem, but every example I have seen is laureate. Sometimes, laurel leaves look like pearls and vice versa, but also note that there is not a forehead jewel on the two examples below and the ties are different. This must simply be an error as I don't remember ever seeing any Vetranio coins from any mint with an undisputable pearl diadem-- only laureate. This must be because Vetranio wanted to stress that he was junior to Constantius II.

The third picture is a Constantius II also issued by Vetranio and you can clearly see the differences in the diadems.
