Title: Constantine I campgate from Arles
Post by: Victor on March 17, 2014, 01:56:08 PM
Here is an interesting coin from the Grassmoor Hoard, it is number 170 in CHRB 12. It seems to be copying a campgate from Arles with a reverse of VIRTVS AVGG, the mintmark is very odd, but probably copying ARLP. The obverse legend is also mirrored, because the engraver forgot what would happen when the coin was struck.

Hi Victor,

I am the current owner of this coin. I received it recently and in general the style looks quite good. But I agree that this might be a barbaric imitation. The reverse legend runs in the correct direction but reads VINTS-(...) with dot ANretrogradeL as mintmark. Do you perhaps know if this was the only barb in the Grassmoor hoard?

I am very interested in the campgates and would love to find/see some more barbaric campgates.

They list 40 irregular coins, which usually means unofficial. I would not be surprised to find there were more, as it can be hard to differentiate when the style is good.

There are a few posts on this board-

A Constantine's VIRTVS AVGG overstruck on a Licinius' IOVI CONSERVATORI.
