Some people don't like wooden cabinets because there is a possibility of the materials used affecting the patina of the coins, but I am tired of ugly archival safe plastic and will check the coins periodically.

Zecchi is a guarantee, I also have a wooden coin cabinet “made in Florence” and it’s a perfect solution.

I wanted a mahogany coin cabinet for years, but they’re almost impossible to find in Australia and shipping from overseas is a big expense.
About 2 years ago, this English made Peter Nichols coin box came up on EBay UK. It was pretty cheap even with shipping so I decided to pounce. It only has one tray and I get about 40 coins - others are in a regular old Linder box. I love it even though its a bit small.
I know that people say wood can affect the coins, but I question if that applies to ancients. How much is the patina really going to change sitting on a felt tray in any kind of box given the coin spent 2000 years in the dirt?

I am always looking for nice cabinets but have not yet pulled the trigger on buying some. I like a certain uniformity in my collections and feel that should extend to the way you store them. A couple of years ago I bought two storage boxes from Lindner (the Nera Kabinett with 6 drawers). So far they have served me quite well as each tray can hold 60 coins (smaller than 24mm) but my campgate collection is slowly but surely filling it up. The boxes are quite sturdy and well built but the velvet in the trays are bit thin and not the greatest quality.

The cabinet arrived today and I am impressed with how nice it is. I also like that it is small enough to fit easily on a shelf. Anyone interested in similar needs to be aware of the different tray sizes though. I got the 15 slot trays and one 6 slot tray for my cabinet. The 15 slot will fit coins up to about 30mm but is not big enough to hold a 2x2 flip; so I store all my flips and tags elsewhere. The 6 slot tray is big enough for a 2x2 flip.

I thought I would resurrect this thread. I needed a new small cabinet for my campgates and unfortunately Lindner has stopped making the previous Nera boxes I used. And since I like uniformity when it comes to displaying/storing coins, I need to find a new solution. I have recently been looking at cabinets as well, though a bit larger than Victor's. I looked at the Zecchi ones, especially the 28 tray versions, and they look really nice! The only issue I have is they do not come with a basic lock. And with small hands around that is a must. In my searches I found this Italian company and were wondering if any one has had any dealings with them? Or know of them? Their cabinets look good but I have not heard of them at all:

An alternative is to build my own cabinet but get the trays from e.g. Abafil. Unfortunately, Abafil trays will cost about EUR50 each... which will cost about EUR1400 for my project...
I am also open to other suggestions (ideally in Europe but anywhere for now).

The Zecchi cases look really nice, but there are other manufactures of wooden cases too, and some of these these offer customization. I wouldn't link it's too big a request to add locking doors to a cabinet design that doesn't have them.

I had a look www.coincabinets.com before as well but the only make the round hole trays, not the ones with square slots and velvet all over. Same with the Royal Mint. But I might email them to find out as their cabinets look really nice!

a) The cost per coin is really quite low when you think about it -- the good wooden trays from Zecchi, Abafil etc cost about $60 each? But if you store maybe 30 coins per tray -- not even filling them -- your cost is about $2 per coin, which is not a bad investment to make in your collection.
b) have you ever shopped for used abafil trays on ebay or wherever? They command a quite respectable fraction of their as-new price, so if you ever wanted to you could resell them easily and recoup most of your money.

It’s a nice coin cabinet and also cheap (it costs 600€). By the way, Zecchi’s cabinet are still the best ones!
