Title: Licinius I IOVI CONSERVATORI AVG from Trier
Post by: Victor on February 02, 2018, 11:17:45 AM
This coin has an unlisted workshop, but quite a few examples are known. It also has a spear over shoulder instead of sceptre; but I think this was a result of the engraver not understanding what he was supposed to engrave, versus an official bust type. Still worth noting, though.

I recently made a topic about this type how RIC VI describes the reverse as Jupiter on eagle, while RIC VII says it is Emperor on eagle. I think that it is Jupiter.

dealer's description

"Licinius I. AE3 Follis. Trier mint .  Obv  IMP LICI-NIVS AVG, laureate, cuirassed bust left holding mappa, sceptre over shoulder . Rev  IOVI CONSER-VATORI AVG, eagle standing left on waved line, its left wing lowered, carrying emperor, standing left, thunderbolt in right hand, sceptre across left shoulder. Mintmark STR.  Ref  RIC VII Trier 211 var,  RARE !!   unlisted officina !!!"
