Title: Constantine I Gloria Exerc. Trier with regular standards?
Post by: Finn235 on July 14, 2017, 04:30:04 PM
Everything but the standards matches RIC:

CONSTANTI-NVS MAX AVG, rosette-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right / GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS, two soldiers holding spears and shields with two standards between them. Standards have no drapery and very thin shafts with pointed tops instead of banners. Mintmark: TR dot P. RIC VII Trier 537.

All the Trier Gloria types have standards that look a bit like thick spears. Style seems far too good to be unofficial, though... right?

Came from the same old collection as the campgate, FWIW.

The Trier standards usually have no drapery, but can have small drapery, like your coin. No drapery was the norm when the issue first started, then small drapery started to appear. Also, the standards don't make or break the RIC number. For the GLORIA EXERCITVS from Trier in RIC VII, the RIC number is assigned based on obverse legend, bust type, mintmark/ field mark and two standard or one standard; though RIC does state what type of standard is normally found.
