Should i leave it as is or could i try to remove a few encrustations?

You might be able to remove some of the deposits on the higher features of the coin and improve it, but you could just as easily make it look worse. I have had mixed results with this type of coin and once you do something, you can't undo it!

I generally leave a coin as it is if I can make out all the important features like mintmark, field marks etc.

Thanks Victor, it looks strongly encrustated.  I will probably only put it in in DW for a a couple of days.
hard to improve, easy to destroy.

If you try to remove some of it, start softly, with something like a wooden or plastic toothpick. These are very gentle to the surface of the coin, but since they are gentle, they will not remove much and sometimes seem to do very little.


I have had pretty good results with polymer picks.

It looks like RIC VII Lyons 35, but these are tougher to find with left facing busts.
