Title: Gratian...not the usual GLORIA ROMANORVM
Post by: Victor on September 01, 2012, 01:36:24 PM
This one is not the usual Emperor dragging a captive type-

Gratian
A.D. 374- 375
18mm   2.2gm
DN GRATIANVS PF AVG, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust
GLORIA ROMANORVM, Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm, palm branch at feet.
In ex. TRP dot
cf. RIC IX 47c

The dot is not very clear because of a weak strike, which also affected the VM of ROMANORVM. While not listed for Gratian, it is not unexpected as this mintmark is listed for Valentinian I.
