Title: Arcadius consular campgate from Thessalonica
Post by: Victor on March 02, 2017, 12:03:41 PM
Here is a consular bust campgate for Arcadius from Thessalonica. It was also issued for Theodosius I and Valentinian II; but examples for Arcadius seem to be a bit harder to find. Usually these have a workshop in the left field, but sometimes, like this example, the field is empty. This one also seems to have closed doors, as it looks like a line going through the center of the doorway.

Arcadius
A.D. 384- 388
18mm   2.2gm
DN ARCADIVS P F AVG; pearl diademed, draped in imperial mantle, holding mappa and scepter (maybe).
GLORIA REI-PVBLICE; campgate with two turrets, Tau-Rho between them.
In ex. TES
RIC IX Thessalonica 59c

Nice one! I was wondering who got that coin as I was the underbidder.
