General Discussion / Building own coin cabinet, best trays?
« Last post by tjaart on January 28, 2024, 10:56:03 AM »
Hi all,

I have been toying with the idea of building my own coin cabinet for a while now and I think this year is the year to start. I have a number of questions:

1. I've read everywhere that Mahogany is the best wood to use for coin cabinets. Does anyone know a good supplier in Europe?
2. One thing that I do not want to do is build the trays as well. Since I am based in Europe, I was wondering which suppliers you would recommend for trays? Are there much of a difference between say Abafil, Zecchi, and cheaper manufacturers such as Lindner?

Any advice would be appreciated, especially around issues you have with your specific coin cabinets or things you would have found useful.

Thanks!
Tjaart

Interesting - I'd never noticed this type before.

The mints seems surprisingly uncoordinated in their legends for Constans - also CONSTANTIS vs CONSTANS at Siscia at Nicomedia (and BEA C vs NOB C at Siscia), some FL, some FL IVL, some neither. IVN for Constans seems a bit of an unforced error though!

The coinage had become so dull by the time Constans was on-boarded, that maybe they'd laid off the brains at the mint as a cost savings. ;D

This first issue for Constans from Heraclea mistakenly has IVN in the obverse legend.

Constans

CONSTANS IVN NOB C; laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right.
GLORIA EXERCITVS; Two soldiers helmeted, stg. facing one another, reversed spear in outer hands, inner hands on shields resting on the ground; between them two standards.

Late Roman Bronze coins / Constantinopolis from Thessalonica with unusual helmet

I bought this coin because it has an unusual helmet. Perhaps really only something a specialist would notice or even care about, the helmet is taller than normal. The composite shows a normal type from Thessalonica to compare with.

Constantinopolis
A.D. 330-3
18x19mm   2.6g
Obv. CONSTAN-TINOPOLIS laureate, helmeted, wearing imperial mantle, holding scepter.
Rev. Victory stg. on prow, holding long scepter in r. hand, and resting l. hand on shield.
in ex. SMTSΔ
RIC VII Thessalonica 188

I have never bought a group lot from him before; but if he correctly described these, it seems close.

Fingers crossed! Is the estimated retail value that Steve Album provides for group lots realistic in your experience?

I just won this group of coins. I like to think of lots like this, with almost no pictures of the coins, as "scratch and win" lottery tickets, as most times, you lose; but every now and then, you win.

auction description

Lot 2862. ROMAN EMPIRE: LOT of 91 Constantinian bronzes, mostly AE3's and AE4's, including Maximian (3 pcs), Maximinus II, Licinius I (9), Licinius II, Constantine I (19, including 4 of Londinium, three EF or AU with lovely patina), Constantinian commemoratives (10), Helena, Theodora, Crispus (2), Constantine II (2), Constans (6), Constantius II (19, including two majorinae with lovely brown patina: EF & VF-EF); average VF or better, quite a few examples EF or better with nice patina, most attributed on accompanying holders; plus a group of 17 worn, mostly unattributed small bronzes of little value; retail value $750, lot of 91 pieces.

if I get anything interesting, I will update this topic.

It's my new favorite coin and currently at the top of the leaderboard for coin of the year...subject to change with my next purchase though.  :D
