Title: Crispus campgate from Arles...doors and rows of blocks
Post by: Victor on April 30, 2017, 12:16:14 AM
This coin has very ornate doors, Bruun noted 20 different door types in "The Constantinian Coinage of Arelate" though I bet there are a few more variations than those he noted. The coin below is pretty close to type T. He also talked about the varying stone layers, from 5-12. He stated that 6 layers was the normal number as evidenced by coins from Crispus, but he soon disappeared from the coinage and engravers from Arles, over time, strayed from the norm. He contrasted Arles campgates with those from Trier where 6 layers is always the norm.
