All 3 types of Procopius together. Very clear difference in style and technique of Valentinian and Julian modules.

COTD / Aurelian ORIENS from Serdica
« Last post by Victor on February 16, 2018, 11:43:38 AM »
This coin is fairly common, but I like the long-necked bust and the reverse is really sharp.

RIC also attributes another issue just like this to Mediolanum, only differentiated by the bust -- Eastern necks are longer (like this one) while Western are shorter.

This coin celebrates the victory of Aurelian over the Palmyrene Empire (note the Eastern headgear of the captive) and the reverse translates as "the rising star of Augustus"

Unlisted / Licinius I VIRTVS EXERCIT from Trier
« Last post by Victor on February 15, 2018, 01:26:42 PM »
RIC does not list any Licinius I coins from this series. It should come after RIC 254. I was the underbidder, it sold for $41; but I did not think it was worth much more because of the reverse. 21mm   4.1gm

Crisis of the 3rd Century / Quietus IOVI CONSERVATORI
« Last post by Victor on February 15, 2018, 01:18:54 PM »
This is a recently sold lot from an eBay auction. The top row (on right, second from the end) is a Quietus with an IOVI CONSERVATORI. I was going to bid, but it sold for $218. That is a good price though, but if I bumped it up much more, it would not have been such a good deal.

Unlisted / Constantine II BEATA from Trier with radiate bust and imperatorial gestus
« Last post by Victor on February 13, 2018, 12:41:56 PM »
This coin is not listed in RIC for the radiate bust. It should come after Trier 387. It’s not in Alten & Zschucke for the •PTR• series either, though they have examples for •PTR crescent (#176- 177). Several people were interested in it as it sold for $176.77.

Late Roman Bronze coins / Re: Campgate from Rome: unlisted?

It is not a variety, but is actually RIC 184; it is, however, an unlisted workshop. Congrats on your new campgate.

Late Roman Bronze coins / Campgate from Rome: unlisted?
« Last post by tjaart on February 11, 2018, 05:00:22 AM »
Hi all,

yesterday the annual Basel coin fair happened here and as usual I attended but without any high hopes. Although there are a number of stands focussing on Roman coins, they tend to be outside my price range. Two years ago I managed to find a little gem in a dealer's "cheap/junk box" (http://www.lateromanbronzecoinforum.com/index.php/topic,622.msg1791.html#msg1791). Last year I bought nothing at the show at all so this year I was not expecting to find anything. However, as usual I was perusing a tray filled with coins for CHF20 each and guess what I found. Another (unlisted?) campgate! It is not in greatest shape but I was thrilled.

Helmeted, cuirassed bust right
CONSTAN-TINVSAVG
Campgate, 4 turrets, no star, no doors, P in left, R in right
VIRTV-SAVGG
RT in exe.
19mm, 3.4g

Is this really an unlisted variety (variation of RIC VII Rome 184) or are my search skills just a bit poor today?

Thanks!
Tjaart
