Title: Two new unofficial campgates
Post by: tjaart on May 03, 2021, 04:00:42 PM
Hi,

I recently got two new unofficial campgates. I am really starting to like this collection direction :) Some of the letters are a bit difficult to make out so I am open to suggestions.

Constantine I ?
Laureate, CONSTAN TINNSAVG
Campgate, 6 layers, 2 turrets, star above, S in l., Pi in r., IIIIOVODEN TIVEC.VESS
NHLT?
18mm, 2.74g

Constantine II ?
Laureate, CONSTANTINVSIVNNOC
Campgate, 5 layers, 2 turrets, star above, base with dots, PROVIDE AECAESS
PAgamma?
Barbarous, cf. Arles? Base has dots in.
17mm, 1.86g

Your first one is copying Constantine I from Arles, [P]ARL with S-F across field. The second coin is hard to see what they were copying...maybe a botched Arles mintmark with PAT...maybe Trier with reversed letters P R (clumsily engraved) T instead of PTR...or an attempt at a Ticinum-- lots of Ticinum with dots in top row.

Thanks for the input! That first one is copying Arles makes sense.
