Title: Interesting Camp Gate?
Post by: Adriaan78 on October 21, 2018, 02:52:19 PM
Hi all,

Although I am a collector of coins of Constantine and his family I do not own many camp gates. However, I came across this example that caught my attention. It is a, somewhat crude, camp gate with one door half open. Although I have seen many variations with doors open or closed I have not seen this before. I researched it a little but could not find a match. What do you guys think?

CONSTATINE II.
Follis.
307-337 Ad.
Rome mint (RS).

Obv/ CONSTANTINVS AVG, helmeted and cuirassed bust right.
Rev/ VIRTVS AVGG, Door ajar and second door closed in campgate with three turrets.; P - R, in ex. RS.

Cat: RIC.176 var. (?)
Bronze (Ae) 2,7g - 21mm

Best regards,
Adriaan

that's a neat variation. I can't remember if I have seen an example before, but it reminded me of other types of coins with the doors ajar, like the Romulus temple coin below.

That is a great example! You are a lucky owner and I am very jealous  ;D

I guess, given the lines of the door, this door is supposed to be opening inwards whereas the Romulus coin is supposed to be opening outwards?
