General Discussion / Numismatic book giveaway
« Last post by Victor on September 25, 2017, 01:59:34 PM »
If anyone is interested, I have an old copy of A Dictionary of Ancient Roman Coins by John Melville Jones that I will send to anyone in the US that would like it.

"A Dictionary of Ancient Roman Coins It is 115 years since Seth Stevenson's magisterial Dictionary of Roman Coins was first published, and there have been several direct reprints since which indicate its continuing value for students of the subject. In this new Dictionary of Ancient Roman Coins, Professor Melville Jones has produced a work on a small scale that brings together in a more compact form the results of recent scholarship. A wealth of coin photographs has been used to illustrate the entries. Created on the traditional A-Z basis, this Dictionary lists deities, denominations, subjects and topics that need explanation or elucidation. It is a dictionary that will be invaluable to all numismatists concerned with Roman coins, Republican and Imperial, and of use to anyone interested in the world of ancient Rome."

US residents only as book rates outside the US are a bit expensive.

if you are interested in the book (and have a mailing address in the USA), just be the first to respond to this topic and then PM me your address.

Fakes / Constantius I SACRA MONET AVGG ET CAESS NOSTR from Siscia
« Last post by Victor on September 23, 2017, 03:03:56 PM »
Here is a fake Constantius I (bottom on right) mixed in with a group of coins. Besides the style and patina being dodgy, the real giveaway is the obverse legend that names him Caesar and Augustus--  CONSTANTIVS NOB C AVG

I bought this group because of one interesting LRB.

I am sure that some of you will have no problem figuring it out.

P.S. Your coin has a reverse die-match with the coin #444  illustrated in Bastien.

Nice and rare find !
Bastien #444, 8th emission, 3 ex.

I assume that there are a few mistakes or approximations in RIC for this reference #15 :

-There is no known coin for Diocletian from the second workshop. Excepted a coin described by Voetter (see Bastien #628 note 4) but not to be found.
-All known coins are from third workshop.
-There is no known IMP DICOLETIANVS P F AVG (12) legend for the COMES AVGG emission (8th). Excepted the coin described by Voetter.
-#15 & 16 are rated common but the five  COMES AVGG types for Diocletian are known by 1 to 5 examples.
-Even if there is a confusion with Maximian's coins, there is only one emission (12th) that has an example for COMES AVGG with MAXIMIANVS P F AVG legend known by only one example (B.628).

Hi Tjaart

We are looking into options for a more accessible version. Bear with us, there are a number of copyright issues.

Best wishes
