Title: long term soaking of uncleaned coins in distilled water
Post by: Victor on January 09, 2019, 02:11:34 PM
I am going to soak these 45 coins in distilled water for a year, if needed, and see how they clean up. I will probably add some TSP detergent (trisodium phosphate).

That is great lot of uncleaned coins! I haven't seen a nice one like that for quite some time. I think there will be a number of good coins in there.

I was most interested in the unofficial Siscian VLPP in lot #3; but I figured I would bid on them all, since they do look pretty decent.

the coins went into the distilled water today. I am also using a candle warmer to heat up the water.

After only a few days soaking, I had to change the water because it was very dirty. Most, if not all, of these coins are basically slugs. Once the surface dirt was removed, it was easy to see there was not much detail on most of them. The original auction pics were shot with a lot of side lighting which helped bring out detail; while my picture is shot with the light at less of an angle.

I am really sorry to see that. The lot looked really promising.
