Title: Gratian VOT XX - Constantinople RIC. 64
Post by: Al.cofribas on August 21, 2017, 04:48:24 PM
Good evening
I'have bought 2 coins of Gratian - Constantinople and need confirmation. Should i classify the two coins as RIC. 64 a ?
1,75 g - 14 mm

Nice finds...your first coin is RIC 64a. There are different workshops CONA, CONB etc., all of which are still RIC 64a; though RIC doesn't note any (but a lot of material was scanty for RIC IX, published in 1933 and a slim volume compared to other RIC volumes) and merely gives the mintmark as CON with the workshop blank, because the example(s) seen were not clear.

Your second coin, CONB✶ is unlisted for the star, though there is a mintmark of CONΓ✶ noted for the previous issue of VOT V (RIC 62b). You could call it 64a var.

Thanks Victor.

We could also call the second coin 64a too because the blank after CON could be anything (CONA,CONA*, CONB, CONB*...) couldn't we ?

Yes, both coins are 64a.

Your coins are like Constantinople 62b, which is a VOT V, and has two mintmarks CONΓ and CONΓ✶.

Though it is RIC 64, I would still note it as a variation or unlisted mintmark, since none with star were noted.
