Crispus VIRTVS EXERCIT from London
« on: April 29, 2016, 08:10:45 AM »
Not in RIC, but it should come after 196. In the new London mint book, there is an unlisted example that is helmeted and cuirassed (9.02.007) facing left; but not one with drapery and seen from the rear. There are examples for Constantine II with this bust type with one difference, they are radiate instead of helmeted.

Crispus
A.D. 320-1
18x19mm   3.2gm
CRISPVS NOB CAES; Helmeted, draped and cuirassed bust left, seen from the rear.
VIRTVS EXERCIT; Standard inscribed VOT/XX with captive seated on ground on either side.
in ex. PLN
RIC VII London –

Nice find !
There is a specimen in the nummus-bible-database which shows the same bust with the NOBIL C legend. And what is interesting is that the London engravers seem to have had some difficulties to represent left busts seen from rear (helmeted or not in fact, cf. Constantine II B-T and V-E).

Yes, with some of the London busts it is hard to even be certain what they were engraving.
