Unlisted Macrinus coin ?
« on: January 18, 2016, 11:37:05 AM »
Hi Victor,
I have a Provincial Coin of Macrinus in my collection that I have been unable to give a full attribution to for more than a year now.
Reverse - COL BER, Neptune holding dolphin & trident, foot on prow.  Colony of Berytos/Berytus, Syria.
Although it falls outside of the LRB dates I was wondering if you would be able to guide me in the right direction regarding someone with specific knowledge of this Emperors coins, I have not found any match nor any literature regarding the coin I own.
The only reference is a lot sold at auction in the 90's at Christies, no pictures and a simple note in the listing.
I havnt included any pictures at this point, awaiting your approval first.

Provincial coinage is pretty far outside my area, but I looked at the Berytos section on Wildwinds and there was not a coin like this listed for Macrinus, but several other emperors had the type--  http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/phoenicia/berytos/t.html

I have searched every database for RPC's past and present and just as you found there are many examples for others but this one for Macrinus remains absent.
What would you suggest I do with it Victor ?
I am at a loss as to what to do next, is it a museum visit or do I have other avenues ?
Here it is
Obverse - IMPMOPSEMACRINOAVG
Reverse - COL BER - Neptune left, holding dolphin in right hand & trident in left. Foot on prow.

I know there are many, many books on provincial coinage, but other than that, I have no idea. You might want to try FORVM discussion board, as you would have a better chance of finding someone who knows what they are talking about, perhaps even a specialist in this area.
