Official or imitation campgate?
« on: June 19, 2015, 08:06:55 AM »
Hi all,

I recently purchased this campgate. It was being sold as an barbarous imitation. Since everything matches up quite well to official copies, I was wondering what the main difference is between this imitation and an official version? Is it really an imitation?

Constantius II 324-325AD
FL CONSTANTIVS NOB C
Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust,
PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS
2 turrets, star above, 6 layers, no doors
Q star AR
RIC VII Arles 276,   R2
1.99g, 20mm

Thanks!
Tjaart

I don't see anything that makes me think that this is an unofficial issue. Someone might think otherwise because there is some corrosion, mainly on the obverse bust, which makes it look a little different and there is a thick desert patina which also obscures detail.

Thanks for the opinion, Victor. I was also quite convinced it was official but I have been wrong before. I might give it a quick brush with a toothbrush to clear off some of the extra dirt.

Thanks!
