Theodosius II GLOR ORVIS TERRAR
« on: August 20, 2012, 06:55:25 PM »
This very rare type was only struck for Theodosius II and examples are only known from three mints—Constantinople, Nicomedia and Cyzicus.  The reverse legend GLOR(IA) ORVIS [for Orbis] TERRAR(VM) translates as “Glory of the Whole World.” This type may allude to the massing of troops for an expedition to take Italy back from the usurper Johannes.
