Constantine I VOT XX from Ticinum
« on: March 23, 2015, 08:57:27 AM »
This is a coin I noticed in a group lot. It is unlisted for the star over the VOT. Ticinum has an issue with a star (it is never over the VOT though) and an issue with a crescent, but no issues with both. The style looks good, so I believe that it is official, perhaps it is only an engravers error or maybe it an unlisted combination of field marks.

Constantine I
Circa A.D. 325
CONSTAN-TINVS AVG; Laureate head only
DN CONSTANTINI MAX AVG laurel wreath enclosing star VOT XX crescent in four lines.
in ex. ST
RIC VII Ticinum –

Have you purchased this lot, i.e. is there a chance for better pictures?

Yes, when I get the lot, I will post a better picture along with measurements.

What do you think about this coin. The star was obviously made by purpose, because in standard arrangement there is no room for star.

That is why the engraver moved "VOT" to the center of the coin. Maybe he did not understand the instructions that star should be replaced by crescent and tried to fit both.

As I said "perhaps it is only an engravers error" and it seems most likely that this is the case, though there is always the chance (small as it seems) it is an unlisted combination of both marks.
