3 Procopius AE3's, all of them unlisted in RIC.
« on: July 31, 2014, 08:22:36 PM »
Coins are known AE3 types but all unlisted in RIC.

1. PROCOPIUS AE3 18mm 2.44g (F)

AV: DN PROCO - PIVS PF AVG; pearl-diademed draped, cuirassed (?) bust r.

REV: SECVRITAS REIPVB; Emperor standing holding spear and leaning on shield.

EXE: CONS(?) Constantinople mint.

REF: unlisted type in both RIC and Cohen, very rare, 365AD.

In the words of Curtis Clay: "The very rare earliest issue of Procopius' bronze coinage, not only continuing Valentinian's reduced weight standard and copying his right-facing portrait, but also taking over Valentinian's reverse legend SECVRITAS REIPVB, combined with Procopius' normal type of emperor standing.  Only two specimens of this coin seem to have been recorded until now:  that published by W. Weiser in Money trend 1977, pp. 8-12, which was later sold in Schulten Sale, October 1984, 771; and a second in BM mentioned by Weiser.  Our specimen may be the third recorded.  Very soon, Procopius introduced his own reverse legend, REPARATIO FEL TEMP, to replace that of Valentinian; soon after that, he reintoduced Julian II's heavier standard for bronze coins and changed the direction of his obverse portrait from right to left.  Most of Procopius' surviving bronze coins belong to this large last issue, on Julian II's standard and with portrait facing left."
By now there are a couple of dozens known of this type.

2. PROCOPIUS AE3 15mm 1.93g (F ragged flan)

AV: DN PROCO - PIVS PF AVG, draped, ladder-shaped diademed bust right

REV: REPARATI - O FEL TEMP, emperor standing facing, head left, holding labarum (+ on standard) and resting hand on shield.

EXE: SM[K_] Cyzicus mint.

REF: RIC IX Cyzicus 9 or var (diadem type), rarity- R, 365AD. C.10 Vienna.

The scarcer phase I of Procopius's emissions, struck on a Valentinian/Valens smaller flan, w/ bust right.

3. PROCOPIUS AE3 large flan 20mm 2.80gr (VF, ragged flan)

AV: DN PROCO - PIVS PF AVG, pearl-diademed draped and cuirassed seen from front bust left;

REV: REPARATI - O FEL TEMP, Emperor standing left holding labarum in right, shield resting on the ground; in left, uncertain object at feet, Chi-Rho in upper right field

EXE: CONSS· Constantinople mint.

REF: RIC IX Constantinople 17a var, unrecorded mintmark, RRR! 365-366AD.

Phase II of Procopius emissions with a larger "Julian II type" AE3 module.

My example of the first type, I really like the style of the portrait:
