Licinius II BEATA TRANQVILLITAS from Trier
« on: May 31, 2014, 12:21:51 PM »
Here is a rare coin- BEATA types for Licinius II are quite rare to begin with (only two RIC numbers- Trier 310 & 311 and RMBT has six additional types.) and this one is also an unlisted officina. Lech has two examples, including this one, on his not in RIC page. I have also included a scan from the Licinius II page of Die römische Münzserie Beata Tranquillitas in der Prägestätte Trier 321-323 (RMBT)

Licinius II
A.D. 321
18x19mm  3.1gm
LICINIVS IVN NOB CAES; laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust left.
BEATA TRAN-QVILLITAS; globe set on altar inscribed VOT/IS/XX; above, three stars.
In ex. PTR
RIC VII Trier 310

Great find!!
What is interesting with specialized works, is that as they're focused on a particular material, rarity rates are often different from general works and are, paradoxally, not always reflecting the reality better than these ones. In this particular case, your coin RMBT1 is rated 10(4-5ex.) and the listed 310 is rated 11 (2-3ex) which is, indeed, very rare in both cases.

I was a little surprised to be the only bidder; but it did start at $100; which I considered a bargain.

Congratulation Victor, an authentic barganin.

I noticed the coin but i'm not interested in Licinius II coins.

I would order a copy of Die römische Münzserie Beata Tranquillitas in der Prägestätte Trier 321-323 (RMBT) but i discovered it is out of stamp.

My favorite MA shop bookseller, Paul-Francis Jacquier, has a new copy for sale for 34 euros

Licinius II
A.D. 321

LICINIVS IVN NOB C; radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right.
BEATA TRAN-QVILLITAS; globe set on altar inscribed VOT/IS/XX; above, three stars.
In ex. [P]TR
RIC VII Trier 311

I think it is an imitation because the mintmark is TR. I don't believe the die is obliterated, TR is well centered at exergue.
And the reverse legend is not BEATA TRAN-QVILLITAS but BEATA TRAN-QVILLITANS.
Note also the "crude" style of both legends, particularly NOB C which looks like NOP C.

Did you buy it?

I did not notice the misspelling of the reverse legend, thanks for pointing it out. As you say, it must be unofficial. Yes, I bought this coin.
