Constantine I ALMANNIA DEVICT from Sirmium
« on: May 21, 2014, 02:47:24 PM »
Here is a neat unofficial coin. The ALAMANNIA DEVICTA type was never issued for Constantine I, but it seems that someone thought that it should have been minted.

Constantine I
A.D. 324- 325
17mm   2.1gm
CONSTAN-TINVS AVG, Laureate bust right.
ALMANNI-A DEVICT, Victory standing right, on bound captive with head turned to left, holding laurel branch and trophy.
In ex. SIRM

Hi victor,
Sorry about using an old thread but I thought it was more appropriate than starting a new one.
I have a much cruder example of the coin you have which I would like your opinion on.
The facial features on the bust have some similarities to your coin but nothing else matches the style.
The obverse is wrongly struck, I believe the term is " retrograde "
Sadly the mintmark is partially off flan with an S & T or I visible.
Just wondering what you think as yours is the only other of this type I have seen.
Weight - 3.61g
Size - 18mm x 16mm

Yours is definitely an unofficial copy. I have seen a few copies of SARMATIA coins over the years, but they are rare, especially compared to the frequency of other unofficial coinage like VLPP's. The SARMATIA coins were struck 3-4 years after VLPP's though, so it seems that whatever spurred the epidemic counterfeiting circa A.D. 318- 20 (combination of coin reform/ shortage) was greatly minimized by A.D. 323- 4.

Below is an example that paired Helena with a SARMATIA reverse, which is unusual as this type was not officially issued for Helena.

Thanks for clearing that up Victor.
Yours is an impossible type & mine is unofficial, that's where I was struggling.
Shame its not in better condition like your coin  :(
Interesting piece though.
Thx again Victor
