Constantine I GE from Trier
« on: February 04, 2014, 02:40:50 PM »
I just got this coin on Ebay from LRBC member Genio Popvli Romani. This coin is not listed in RIC for the B4 bust, but it should come after Trier 544. This is another example of a coin that is not really that rare despite being unlisted in RIC. There was an example in the Chapelle-Les-Luxeuil Hoard (# 517) and Lech has examples on his Not in RIC page, including one from LRBC member Nikko.

It seems an obverse die match with my coin example.

Right, it seems to be.
You make me realize that I did not pay attention and never had sent it to Lech.
I've only sent him the prima officina coin.

Representation of the wreath is not very clear but the only types of diadem for #544 are rosette (with pearl or laurel)

Any opinion is welcome as in fact some people see this bust as diademed due to "round" laurel leaves representation.

It seems most likely to be laureate rather than a diadem, maybe like the issue at Cyzicus where the engravers often made the laureate issues look like pearls. There is also not a clear circular forehead jewel like the other examples you posted, but perhaps this is also poorly engraved.
